Second Opposition MP assassinated

A second Orange Demoncratic Movement mp, David Kimutai Too, was shot dead yesterday in Eldoret in what was quickly described by police as a killing motivated by a “love triangle.” The assailant was named as Police Constable Andrew Maoche. He later surrendered himself to the police.

A woman travelling with David Kumatai Too was also gunned down. Kenya’s EA Standard reported that the woman, Police Constable Eunice Chepkwony, was shot several times in the stomach and later died from her injuries. A family spokesman disowned stories printed in Kenya’s Daily Nation that PC Eunice Chepkwony was Too’s lover.

Mr Julius Langat, a family spokesman said the woman was a relative and there was no way they could be involved in an affair. “Eunice was a neighbour and a family friend. They were not in a love affair as the Police Commissioner claimed,” said Langat.

Langat also said Too had complained that his life was in danger.

“This is a cover-up by the police in an attempt to distort information. The police should tell Kenyans the truth instead of taking us in circles.”

ODM secretary-general Prof Nyong’o said Mr Too’s murder was ‘also political and constituted a wider conspiracy of terror.’

“The MPs are targeted so that the other side can have a majority in Parliament.”

The latest killing has altered the balance of power in parliament. Kibaki’s PNU party now have a majority of 103 mps to ODM’s 101.

Riots flared in Kericho and Kisumu on hearing the news of Too’s death.
